According to the Sûreté du Québec, a fire broke out at the Bécancour Smelter this morning. Witnesses report that an explosion preceded it. The City of Bécancour confirmed that the firefighters who were dispatched on site were able to confirm a significant release of smoke.  On Twitter, the Minister of Labor, Jean Boulet, said there had been no injuries and firefighters were still there. The aluminium smelter has been operated by executives since the lock-out of some 1,000 workers who have been raging for more than 15 months, since January 11, 2018.
