Global Aluminium Foil Roller Initiative elects Oliver Hommel as new president

Oliver Hommel, Head of Product Area Foil BU Global Products Hydro Aluminium, has been elected President of the Global Aluminium Foil Roller Initiative (GLAFRI) at the organisation’s General Assembly held in Shanghai.

GLAFRI is the global association coordinating actions on sustainability in order to support foil market growth and promote innovative developments. Almost 10% of annual global aluminium primary production is converted to aluminium foil.

The initiative is happy to welcome new members and already represents 60 members from 28 countries. These companies account for about half of the global production of aluminium foil and thin strip below 200 microns.

Following his appointment Mr Hommel said, “I am honoured to have been given the task to leading GLAFRI, together with my colleagues elected as Vice-Presidents. After less than two years of existence GLAFRI already is a known and respected body in the aluminium foil world. We will continue promoting aluminium foil as material of choice in many areas such as food and pharmaceutical packaging, as well as technical applications such as heat exchangers and insulation.”

The Vice-Presidents of GLAFRI who have been elected are:

• Göksal Güngör, General Manager, Assan Aluminyum
• Patrick Lawlor, CEO/President, Granges Americas

The General Assembly took place during the Global Aluminium Foil Roller Conference (GLAFCO) in Shanghai which was attended by more than 120 delegates. The focus of the presentations focused primarily on foil market development around the globe, sustainability, and customer’s and supplier’s views. The next conference is planned for the first quarter of 2019.
