United Steelworkers union scraps efforts for U.S. tariff on aluminium

A Canada-U.S. trade fight over aluminium appears to be over before it really began.

The United Steelworkers union abandoned efforts on Friday to get the U.S. government to impose steep tariffs on aluminium imports, blaming a lack of industry unity.

Last week, the labour union petitioned the Obama administration to put an emergency tariff of up to 50% on all imports – a move that could have sideswiped Canadian producers, including Rio Tinto.

But the union abruptly withdrew the petition in the wake of outrage from the Canadian government, rival unions and...

The United Steelworkers (USW) has filed a petition under Section 201 of U.S. trade law that seeks to stem a flood of imported primary unwrought aluminum that has seriously injured the American industry and threatens additional job and capacity losses.

A Section 201 petition allows President Obama to provide relief and implement an adjustment plan, if appropriate, once the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) finds imports are a substantial cause of the harm.

The USW petition claims that the domestic industry’s circumstances are critical. In such cases, the ITC...

According to packaging waste recovery data recently released by the Environment Agency, the “business” recycling rate for all aluminium packaging exceeded its 2015 target (49%), reaching 76,027 tonnes*.
However, research conducted to determine how much...
